TERMINOLOGY

  • TARMACADAM

Tarmacadam (Tarmac) used to be a surfacing material derived from mixing tar with gravel to create a stable aggregate that can be applied directly to the surface. Over time the Tar has been replaced with bitumen based products such as Asphalt, SMA, Resin Bonded & More.  Each product has its advantages dependant on the application & requirements of the customer. We are happy to discuss your requirements and materials that would best suit your need.

  • RESIN BONDED

Resin Bonding is the process of scattering loose dried aggregates onto a coating of resin after the resin has been applied to a surface. It is designed to resemble the texture and appearance of loose gravel. Resin bonded aggregates are sometimes referred to as a scattercoat, broadcast or coat system.  Resin bonding must not be confused with resin bound, which is the process of mixing the aggregates with the resin. The resulting resin bound aggregate mix is trowelled down for a smooth, flat finish, with no loose aggregates. Both Resin Bonded & Resin Bound have characteristics to suit the application, please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • MACHINE LAY

Whether or not a job is machine laid or hand laid can be dependant on many factors i.e. Size of works, Types of application, Length of works, Cost effectiveness & much more.  With materials delivered onsite in purpose built insulated delivery lorries the and materials supplied from QA sources these help to ensure consistency of mixing and delivery temperatures.  Modern, paving machines have an electrically/thermostatically heated screed to ensure the material is laid accurately at the optimum temperature.  The use of High performance compaction equipment and twin drum vibratory rollers to ensure thorough compaction completes the machine laying process.

  • HANDLAY

Handlay of materials and the suitability of handlay over machine lay is again much dependant on the application required.  Handlay materials are delivered onsite using insulated lorries with chutes allowing the hot material to be kept on the insulated lorry for as long as possible. These chutes are used to direct the material accurately into wheelbarrows so it can be quickly moved and deposited where the rake hand needs it.  Handlay requires a highly skilled, experienced and fully manned.  A typical hand lay crew will consist of barrow-men, rake-hands, roller operators and finishers. Each has a pivotal role to play in producing a top quality surface. Teamwork is essential !!

  • CIVIL ENGINEERING

Generally civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialised civil engineers to fit and serve fixed projects within their given site, community and terrain by designing grading, drainage, pavement, water supply, sewer service, electricical and communications supply.  We are happy to discuss your civil requirements so please feel free to contact Bourne Surfacing & Civils & Civils Ltd.
